Before You Buy Silvervine Sticks Again: 6 Things to Check (Start With the End of the Stick)Why Owners of Catnip-Proof Cats Are Switching to Japanese Silvervine: 6 Checks First
My cat walked past everything I bought her. Catnip spray. Catnip bubbles. A fresh catnip plant. A $22 bag of farm catnip.
Then a pack of plain wood sticks that went straight into the drawer. About $187 on things she walked past.

Then a neighbor who grew up in Japan looked in that drawer and laughed. Cats there are given matatabi, which we call silvervine, to chew. Chewing it helps keep their teeth clean.
When I finally got a stick with the fruit on it, my cat went straight for the fruit.
Here are the 6 checks I wish I'd run before I bought anything. Run them on any brand, ours included.

The 6 checks
- Is there a gall fruit on every stick?
- What is it made of, and is it made to chew?
- What do you really pay, and how long does it last?
- Is the subscription your choice?
- Can you check the reviews?
- Does the guarantee cover an opened pack?
Screenshot this and use it on any brand.
1. Is there a gall fruit on every stick?
This is the one that matters most, so start with a stick you already own and look at the end of it. In a 2017 study in BMC Veterinary Research, researchers offered cats different parts of the silvervine plant. 8 of 9 cats responded to the gall fruit. Only 1 of 8 responded to the wood chips (Bol et al., 2017).
The gall fruit is a small, knobbly brown fruit that grows on the vine. A stick with no fruit is mostly the part fewer cats went for.
Plain wood vs the fruit
Cats that responded, Bol et al., 2017
Look at the end of the stick. No brown fruit? Then your cat is mostly getting wood.

2. What is it made of, and is it made to chew?

Chewing is the whole point. Japanese cat keepers have given their cats silvervine to chew for generations, because the chewing keeps teeth clean and helps fight dental disease. Most cats show signs of dental disease by age 3 (AVMA), and very few will sit still for a toothbrush.
So a stick has two jobs. It has to give your cat a reason to pick it up, which is the fruit from check 1, and something rough for the teeth to work on while they chew. Ask for a full parts list, then check it against the photos. You should be able to point at every part in the picture. If a listing promises things you can't see or check, ask for proof before you pay.
What's in one Meowie stick
- Silvervine wood (Actinidia polygama)
- Rough jute twine, wrapped around the wood end to end, so it scrubs teeth as your cat bites down
- A straw tassel at each end
- One gall fruit, on a twine loop at one end
3. What do you really pay, and how long does it last?
Ignore the crossed-out "was" price. 7 of the 9 silvervine sellers we checked showed an inflated one. Work out two things instead: what one stick really costs you with shipping, and how long the pack lasts. Then compare the packs with the brand's own smallest pack, not with a made-up number. One Meowie stick lasts about 4 to 5 days for one cat.
Meowie, worked out
| Sticks | You pay | Per stick | Lasts 1 cat |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | $39.99 + $5.81 shipping | $8.00 | About 3 weeks |
| 10 | $49.99, ships free | $5.00 | About 6 weeks |
| 20 | $84.99, ships free | $4.25 | About 3 months |
10 sticks are $29.99 less than two 5-packs, and 20 sticks are $74.97 less than four. Both come with the free Cat Wellness Planner, a 16-page printable with a dental care log and stick swap days. Subscribe and save 20%: 10 sticks are $39.99 a month ($4.00 a stick), 20 sticks are $67.99 a month ($3.40 a stick). Subscriptions ship free.
4. Is the subscription your choice?

Subscribe and save can be a good deal. It's a bad one when the box is ticked before you touch it, or the second box costs more than the first. All 3 silvervine sellers we found with a live plan started you on it. Before you pay, find three things: is one-time the default, what does every box cost, and how do you cancel?
What a fair plan shows you
5. Can you check the reviews?

A star count is only worth something if you can check it. Some brands show a headline count far above what their own review list holds. Three quick tests: does the count match the reviews you can scroll? Has the brand been around long enough to have that many? Does the same sentence show up under different names?
6. Does the guarantee cover an opened pack?

OPENED
IS FINE
You can't know if your cat likes a stick until you open the pack. If you've ever emailed for a refund and been told it only applies to unopened packages, you know how that feels. A guarantee that only covers unopened packs covers almost nothing. All 3 silvervine refund policies we could read were narrower than the sales page: unopened only, a paid return, or unused only. Read the refund policy itself, not the badge.
What to expect
How it usually goes, from the first sniff to part of the week.
- Day 1
The first sniff. A cheek rub, then a roll and a kick. Some cats need a second try on another day.
- Week 1
3 or 4 sessions of 10 to 15 minutes, with you in the room. Then put it away in a drawer so it stays special.
- Month 1
It's part of the week. Regular chewing helps keep teeth clean. Swap in a fresh stick when the twine loosens or the wood splinters. One stick per cat.
The 6 checks, side by side
"Typical" is what we found on 9 silvervine sellers' pages and the 3 refund policies we could read, Oct 2026. We don't name brands, so run the checks on any brand yourself.

Questions
My cat ignored silvervine sticks before. Why try again?
Check whether those sticks had a gall fruit on them. In Bol 2017, 8 of 9 cats responded to the gall fruit, compared with 1 of 8 to the wood chips. Every Meowie stick has one. And if your cat still shrugs, you get your money back without sending anything back.
Does chewing it really help my cat's teeth?
That's why Japanese cat keepers have given silvervine to their cats for generations. The rough jute twine scrubs teeth as your cat chews, which helps keep them clean and fight dental disease. The gall fruit is what gets your cat chewing in the first place.
Will it work on my cat?
We can't promise that, and nobody honestly can. About 1 in 3 cats don't respond to catnip (Bol 2017), and silvervine is a different plant. Reactions vary from cat to cat. That's why the guarantee covers an opened pack.
What does "no return needed" mean?
Email hello@meowie.co within 60 days of delivery with your order number. We refund what you paid to your original payment method, usually within 7 business days. You keep the sticks.
Do I have to subscribe?
No. One-time is the default. If you choose Subscribe and save, you get 20% off, every box is the same price and ships free, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime from your account. No cancellation fees, no minimum.
How long does shipping take?
Orders usually leave us within 1 to 3 business days and arrive in 7 to 10 days, tracked and insured. US shipping is free on orders of $45 or more, and $5.81 under that. Subscriptions always ship free.
How do I give it to my cat?
Put a stick on the floor where your cat hangs out and let them find it. Play together for a few minutes, then put it away. Supervise play, and replace a stick once it's worn, splintering or missing its fruit.

Run the 6 checks on us. Then let your cat decide.
